Arunachal Pradesh-based farmers' bodies, the Siang Indigenous Farmers’ Forum (SIFF) and the Indigenous Rights Advocacy Dibang (IRAD) have asked the Arunachal Pradesh government to stop the commissioning of 10,000 MW hydropower project on the Siang River.
These farmers' bodies have threatened to protest if the hydropower project is not scrapped.
With its origin in the Manasarovar Lake region, near Mount Kailash, on the northern side of the Himalayas in Burang County of Tibet, the Siang River enters India near the village of Gelling in Arunachal Pradesh and flows southwest through the Assam Valley as the Brahmaputra
The farmers' organizations have accused the State Government of entering into agreement with the National Hydropower Power Corporation without consulting the local people and taking them into confidence.
Tasik Pangkam, the president of SIFF informed that this hydropower project will displace the Adi community in the Siang River belt and will make them homeless. He pointed out, the Kaptai Hydroelectric Project commissioned in 1960s in Bangladesh has displaced Chakma and Hajong people and they were forced to take refuge in India.
