In sync with the Government of India’s ambitious target of having 100 GW of solar power generation capacity by 2022, Mumbai International airport, one of the city’s most significant infrastructures, has successfully commissioned additional solar power of 410 kWp. The solar panels, spread across five different locations at the T2 and Cargo terminals, have been strategically positioned on the roof tops of the building for optimum utilization of space at the airport.

Until now, CSIA was generating 650 kWp of solar power. Through additional solar installations the capacity will increase by 410 kWp, taking the total output up to 1060 kWp.  The next phase of the solar project will include plant installations of 1700 kWp.  The capacity is anticipated to further enhance to 6400 kWp by 2017. With over 40 million travellers using the airport annually, the city airport handles the highest number of passengers per acre in comparison to other airports in the country.

MIAL Spokesperson said, “We are an environment conscious organization. Our state-of-the-art infrastructure mirrors our efforts towards achieving and promoting sustainability. At MIAL, safeguarding the environment remains our prime focus in all our endeavors.”

Other initiatives by MIAL

  • while inhibiting maximum heat. This helps in curtailing air conditioning load during day light

  • CSIA  has also installed Sun pipe lighting in many office areas where the roof is open to sky

  • The Airport’s apron is the first of its kind in Asia to be completely lit with the LED high mast lighting
