How Tekla Software helped Construct FIFA World Cup Stadiums on Schedule

The whole world is cheering for their favourite football team as the 2018 World Cup is underway in Russia. Of the 12 Russian stadiums hosting World Cup matches, eight have been constructed using Trimble’s Tekla Structures BIM software.

Mordovia Arena in Saransk, which heavily used Tekla Structures, has the capacity to host 44,000 visitors. The stadium features unique geometry and a large number of welded connections, resembles a bright red sun – one of the symbols of the Republic of Mordovia. The project schedule did not allow any delays, and the stadium structure was completed on schedule: Fabricator shipped all steel structures by March 31, 2017 – almost exactly one year after signing the contract.

The Spartak Stadium, home to FC Spartak Moscow, has the capacity for 45000 visitors. Its façade features hundreds of interlinking chainmail-like diamonds, which represent the Spartak logo. The facade can be changed depending on which teams are playing.

On the other hand, St. Petersburg Stadium features a beautiful “spaceship design” and a fascinating, 286-meter-wide retractable roof.

Volgograd Arena can host 45,000 visitors. The cabled roof and meshed exterior are the standout features of the arena. These challenging infrastructures utilised Tekla Structural BIM workflow to deliver high quality work within scheduled time.

Furthermore, Trimble’s Tekla Structures was also used for the construction of Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, Samara Arena, Sochi Fisht Stadium and Kazan Arena stadiums.

Paul Wallett, Regional Director for Trimble Solutions, India and Middle East said, “World championships need world-class construction, and Tekla Structures has been a game changer when it comes to the creation of many of the world’s top stadiums. Our constructible, highly accurate building information models support the entire workflow from design to manufacturing, and from construction to maintenance. With structural BIM workflow contractors, design and installation project members delivered high quality work while meeting their deadlines.”

Tekla Structures is the preferred BIM software for constructing mega sporting arenas around the world. For Euro 2016 tournament in France, Tekla Structures was used in planning and execution of the sports facilities in three major stadiums in Lyon, Bordeaux and Marseille. The software played a critical role in meeting the tight construction deadlines for Arena Amazônia, ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil, and for Future Arena and the Youth Arena, two major arenas for 2016 Rio De Janeiro Summer Olympics. Beijing’s iconic Bird’s Nest stadium, which hosted both the opening and closing ceremonies of 2008 Olympics, was also designed and constructed using Tekla Structures.
