The Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) has decided to construct a solid waste management (SWM) plant on its own land, nearly five years after the project was first conceived in 2011.
The board has floated a request-for-proposal (RFP) from prospective operators. PCB also expects operators to run and maintain the plant for thirty years after it is commissioned. The proposal adds that while it prefers a build-operate-transfer (BOT) model, the board is also prepared to use its own resources.
The RFP tender is mainly for BOT model of operation but there is also a provision for the board to use its own resources to build the plant, depending on the bids," said an official of PCB's engineering department. The plant will be constructed at PCB's trenching ground in the Hadapsar industrial estate in an effort to reduce waste piling up at the location and save transportation costs, board officials stated.
Excessive accumulation of garbage at the ground is thought to be the reason for the nearly weeklong blaze, which was extinguished on Sunday morning.
"Apart from restarting the vermicomposting facility, the waste management plant will go some way in reducing the amount of refuse at the location. We had floated the proposal at the end of April and we hope to take it forward very soon," said chief executive officer of PCB Sanjeev Kumar.
