Sembcorp’s 660 Mw super critical thermal unit in AP ready for operations

Sembcorp Gayatri Power Limited(SGPL) announced today that it has synchronised the first 660 Mw unit of its 1,320 Mw power plant in Andhra Pradesh to the grid.

The company already owns and operates one of the two super critical coal-fired power plants in the 2,640-Mw Sembcorp Gayatri Power Complex in Krishnapatnam in Nellore district.

The first 1,320 Mw power plant by the SPV-Thermal Powertech Corporation India was commenced full commercial operations in September 2015 and was supplying power to the states of AP and Telangana.

The second power plant is expected to be fully operational in the fourth quarter of 2016, the company said.

Sembcorp, Singapore owns more than 70% stake in the project while its joint venture partner, Hyderabad-based Gayatri Group, holds the remaining equity in the company.

Atul Nagund, managing director of SGPL said, "The synchronisation of the first unit to the grid is a significant milestone towards the completion of Sembcorp's second power plant in Andhra Pradesh. We look forward to commencing commercial operations of this first unit in the third quarter of 2016, and the full completion of the plant in the fourth quarter 2016."
