ITD Cementation India embarked on a remarkable journey of airport construction, starting with the Kolkata Airport project. From laying the foundation to its successful completion in 2013, the company led the way with innovation and excellence that continues to resonate. Expanding their horizons after the triumph in Kolkata, they brought their expertise to the construction of Trichy Airport. Their unwavering commitment to precision and efficiency remained evident throughout the project.
The Airport Authority of India (AAI) collaborated with ITD Cementation India, a renowned Engineering and Construction firm, to construct a new terminal at Tiruchirapalli International Airport. Aimed to ease congestion during busy times, accommodating 4.45 million passengers annually with a peak-hour capacity of 3,480 passengers. The two-story terminal, spanning 75,600 square meters, will be located near the runway and feature a unique architectural design influenced by local culture and traditions. Passengers arriving and departing from the terminal will experience a sense of place through its design elements, reflecting the region's identity. This endeavor promises to bolster air connectivity for Trichy and its environs in Tamil Nadu.
The project encompasses a variety of facilities, including a Control Room, automation facilities, VHF, AAI offices, and meteorological offices, all equipped with advanced HVAC systems. Further technological integration includes HVAC systems, water and sewage treatment plants, rainwater collection systems, ground source heat pumps, and a solar power plant, showcasing a strong commitment to sustainability. Additionally, it involves the construction of a new apron, an air traffic control (ATC) tower, and other airside amenities.
In addition to the new apron, the expansion project involved constructing associated taxiways, supporting equipment rooms, and installing terminal radar and radar simulation. The 32-meter-high structure prioritizes passenger comfort, featuring a central air conditioning system powered by four 1000 TR chillers. Moreover, 28 elevators and 5 escalators have been recently installed for seamless terminal movement. Emphasizing passenger safety, the terminal incorporates a comprehensive fire protection system with robust detection and alarm systems, strategically placed hydrants, and sprinklers for swift emergency response.
Leveraging the latest in Information Technology (IT) and Building Management Systems (BMS), the airport ensures top-notch safety, security, and convenience for passengers and staff alike. Constructed with 160,000 cubic meters of concrete, 21,000 metric tons of reinforcing steel, and 11,000 metric tons of structural steel, the terminal stands as a testament to modern engineering prowess, ranking among the largest public space structures in the region.
Designed to achieve a four-star rating from Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA), the terminal prioritizes sustainability. From energy-efficient canopies and LED lighting to low heat-gain double-glazing units and extensive landscaping with indigenous plants, every component reflects environmental consciousness.
B. Selvakumar, General Manager of Engineering Projects at Trichy Airport under the Airports Authority of India, emphasized the urgent need for upgrading the passenger terminal and airside facilities at Trichy International Airport due to the significant overcrowding of the existing terminal. We're happy to dedicate the state-of-the-art terminal building to the people of the country, especially to those in and around Trichy. Congratulations to the entire project team for their relentless work! Special recognition goes to the construction team at ITD Cementation India Limited, whose remarkable efforts overcame challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, cyclone-induced rains, escalation in construction materials prices, increased labor costs, non-availability of stone aggregates, non-availability of vessels to transport imported materials, and non-availability of oxygen for fabrication during the COVID-19 pandemic period. However, ITD demonstrated relentless teamwork to complete the project, which was inaugurated by the Honorable Prime Minister of India on January 2, 2024
