Nitin Gadkari, Road Transport & Highways, Shipping and Water Resources has inaugurated the newly constructed 24 MTPA Vizag iron ore handling complex build by Essar Vizag Terminal (EVTL). The complex has been build at a cost of Rs. 830 crores with special focus on global best practices in mechanisation and sustainable environment protection. The company stated that among Indian ports this complex will have the fastest vessel turnaround time for iron ore. The cargo loading capacity of this terminal has been upgraded to 24 MTPA.
With this upgradation, the iron ore handling complex can now dock on the outer harbour of Vizag Port capesize vessels up to 2,00,000 DWT, with a depth of 20 metres. To enable record cargo handling performance the company has also beefed up the entire 9.5-km conveyor network and upgraded to PLC automation. The port is now equipped to serve South-East Asia countries including Korea, Japan and China.
This project was handled over to Essar Vizag Terminal in 2015 on Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Transfer (DBFOT) basis for a period of 30 year.
