Cutting-edge technologies and smart machinery are revolutionising infrastructure development, says Harendra Singh, Chairman & Managing Director, HG Infra Engineering

The timeline of highway projects in India reflects a series of landmark initiatives...

How has the road & highway sector in India evolved over the years?
India boasts the second-largest road network globally which certifies the pivotal role the highway sector plays in propelling economic growth. Over the years, we've witnessed a transformative evolution marked by strategic interventions and ambitious programs. The start of Bharatmala Pariyojana in 2015 marked a significant milestone aimed at developing an extensive 24,800-km highway network under Phase 1. This visionary initiative started by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) adopts a corridor-based approach departing from traditional package-centric approach. By focusing on enhancing connectivity through inter-corridor routes, expressways, bypasses and feeder routes, Bharatmala promises to revolutionize transportation efficiency, reduce travel time and bolster economic growth by addressing critical infrastructure gaps. The timeline of highway projects in India reflects a series of landmark initiatives including the National Highways Development Project (NHDP) launched in 1999. NHDP was instrumental in elevating the qualitative and quantitative standards of our national highways infrastructure. Subsequently, the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) emerged as a game-changer extending road connectivity to rural hinterlands and fostering inclusive development by integrating underdeveloped regions into the economic mainstream. The recent budgetary allocation of 2.78 lakh crore rupees by the Government signals a strong focus on the sustained growth of the road and highway sector. This significant investment represents a clear message – infrastructure development remains a top priority. This substantial funding will provide the resources needed to further develop India's crucial road & highways network.

The concept of Green Highways has also gained immense momentum with the large focus on sustainability. Could you please share your views on this topic?
The concept of Green Highways has indeed gained immense momentum in recent years reflecting a growing emphasis on sustainability within the construction industry. At HG Infra, we are fully aligned with this trend and are committed to adopting eco-friendly practices throughout our highway projects. We recognize Green Highways as a crucial aspect of sustainable infrastructure development integrating environmental responsibility into every stage of project execution. Our approach encompasses various initiatives including the utilisation of recycled materials such as fly ash, pond ash and plastic in road construction which not only conserves resources but also minimizes waste generation. In addition, we have gone beyond building roads. Our commitment to sustainability includes extensive tree planting initiatives along highways. We have collaborated with various stakeholders and NGOs to plant numerous saplings over the past year contributing to a greener and healthier environment. Overall, our commitment to sustainability is serving as a guiding principle in our quest to create infrastructure that not only enhances connectivity but also promotes environmental stewardship.

What are the biggest challenges that the road sector faces today?
Delays in acquiring land for road projects especially in densely populated areas can be a lengthy and complicated process. In addition to this, several other challenges need attention which includes commodity price fluctuations particularly in materials like steel and asphalt which pose budgetary uncertainties.Additionally, prolonged monsoons disrupts project timelines resulting in inflating costs and jeopardizing deadlines. The shortage of skilled labor compounds these issues necessitating dedicated recruitment and training efforts. Moreover, complex financial riders, regulatory approvals and aligning human capital with management vision add further complexity.

How has been the evolution of tech expertise & smart machineries backing the sector?
The evolution of technology expertise and smart machinery in the road and highway sector has revolutionized infrastructure development. Advanced materials, precise mapping technologies and smart machinery have improved durability, efficiency and safety. Automated paving machines, intelligent compaction systems and real-time monitoring enhance productivity and quality control on construction sites. Overall, these advancements contribute to more efficient, resilient and sustainable road infrastructure.

In your opinion, what will make India standout amongst global counterparts in the future, particularly in the development of roads and highways?
India has the potential to stand out globally in the future particularly in the development of roads and highways due to several key factors. Bharatmala Pariyojana, Dedicated Freight Corridors, Amritsar-Kolkata Expressway, Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (Atal Setu), Zoji La Tunnel, etc are some of the projects which demonstrate a commitment to expanding and enhancing the road network. Secondly, India's focus on innovation and technology adoption in transportation including smart highways and sustainable construction practices sets it apart. Additionally, our demographic dividend and urbanization present opportunities for integrated transportation networks. Finally, India's rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes offer scope for innovative and aesthetically pleasing infrastructure designs.
