Government to set up two additional Strategic Petroleum Reserves

The government of India has announced setting up of two additional strategic petroleum reserves (SPR) at Odhisa and Karnataka. The SPR will provide additional 6.5 million metric tonnes (MMT) of fuel to use in emergency. These SPR facilities will come up at Chandikhol in Odisha and Padur in Karnataka with dedicated single point moorings for these two facilities. These facilities will have capacities of 4 MMT and 2.5 MMT respectively and will be constructed in underground rock caverns.

Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited the government agency which maintains SPRs has currently storage of 5.33 MMT of crude oil at three locations, viz, Vishakhapatnam (1.33 MMT), Mangalore (1.5 MMT) and Padur (2.5 MMT). All these locations are construction in underground rock caverns. According to the consumption data of India’s crude requirement the current storage of 5.33 MMT will supply approximately 10 days of India’s crude requirement in case of emergency.
