Dr. S. Velmurugan currently holds the position of Chief Scientist and Head of the Traffic Engineering and Road Safety Division at CSIR – Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) in New Delhi. He has completed his Ph.D. in Transportation Systems Engineering from IIT Bombay in March 1995 and brings over 30 years of expertise in traffic engineering, road safety, transportation planning, and transport economics.
Dr. Velmurugan has played a pivotal role in the formulation and revision of 18 publications for the Indian Roads Congress (IRC) over the past 12 years. His leadership extends to serving as Project Leader or Coordinator for World Bank sponsored projects, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and various state Public Works Departments (PWD) projects for the conduct of various stages of Road Safety Audits (RSA) covering more than 9000 Kms. Since May 2017, Dr. Velmurugan has been the Joint Course Coordinator for the highly regarded 15-day Certification Course on “Road Safety Audit and Other Road Safety related Aspects” run by CSIR – CRRI, widely acclaimed within the Highway and Transportation fraternity in the country.
He is a prolific researcher with more than 150 technical papers published in esteemed International and National journals and conferences, having presented in over 100 research forums. He was bestowed with half dozen national / international awards by IRC, Association of State Transport Undertakings (ASRTUs), Australian Endeavour Research and Construction Industry Development Council (CIDC) recognizing his academic and research accomplishments during the last two decades.
