The Union Government has cleared the civil aviation policy. According to the new Civil Aviation Policy, released by the civil aviation ministry, the government has replace the 5/20 rule under which domestic airlines can fly abroad only when they have a fleet of at least 20 aircraft and have flown in India for five years.

According to new rules, an airline will have to allocate 20 aircraft or 20 percent of their total fleet of aircraft, whichever is higher, to the domestic sector if they wish to fly overseas.

The ‘5/20 rule’ was approved by the UPA government in December 2004. The new policy will help new airlines like AirAsia India and Vistara to fly to international routes.
