Encouraged by the keen response for the first 1GW offshore wind project, the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy has come out with medium and long term target for off-shore wind power capacity additions. For the short term the Ministry has set a target of 5 GW by 2022. For long term the ministry has declared a target of 30 GW by 2030.

In October 2015 the Ministry has notified National Off-Shore Wind Policy to realise the offshore wind potential in the country. Preliminary studies have showed good wind potential in southern tip of Indian peninsula and west coast for off-shore wind power. Globally, off-shore wind power has been installed in countries such as China, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, and UK.
