Deepak Gupta Takes Charge as CMD of GAIL (India)
Deepak Gupta has assumed charge as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of GAIL (India). Gupta, a Mechanical Engineer from Delhi College of Engineering, brings more than 35 years of experience across the oil and gas value chain.
Gupta joined GAIL as Director (Projects) in February 2022 and has since overseen several high-impact initiatives, including the expansion of Natural Gas and LPG pipeline networks, development of gas processing facilities, enhancement of SCADA infrastructure, and progress on clean energy and green transition projects aimed at achieving GAIL’s Net-Zero targets.
He currently leads operations and maintenance of GAIL’s extensive network of over 20,000 km of Natural Gas and LPG pipelines, compressor stations and processing plants. Under his leadership, the company also completed the Dabhol Breakwater Project of Konkan LNG Limited, enabling year-round operations at the facility.
Before joining GAIL, Gupta spent 32 years with Engineers India, where he led major refinery and petrochemical projects, including the Dangote Refinery in Nigeria, HMEL’s Bathinda petrochemical complex, and GAIL’s Pata petrochemical expansion. He also steered Mongolia’s first greenfield refinery project, contributing to India’s international energy partnerships.
Gupta has served on the boards of several joint ventures, including Talcher Fertilizers, ONGC Petro-additions (OPaL), South-East Asia Gas Pipeline Company, Green Gas and Maharashtra Natural Gas, playing key roles in strategy, governance and long-term planning.
A prolific writer and thought leader, he has authored multiple technical papers on project execution, digitisation and industry best practices.
