Our vision for renewable energy sector in India would be see they accelerate further in terms of deployment …

Energy storage is a crucial aspect of renewable energy integration. What efforts are being undertaken to improve energy storage infrastructure?
Integration of storage and as well as promoting hybrids in renewables is very important to deliver 24X7 power. Policy wise lots of initiatives have been taken to promote solar and wind as hybrid as well as storage of energy on grid scale. We have already started seeing many tenders getting floated from Govt of India and few projects already getting established. We are still in early stage of storage infrastructure getting deployed.

What are the key challenges faced by the renewable energy sector?
Deployment of renewables is growing in leaps and bounds, especially solar energy which has shown impressive installation figures in last decade. With recent implementation of ALMM regulation we anticipate demand supply gap in short to mid-term leading to shortage of solar modules. Second challenge is on creation of adequate capacity in entire value chain of solar components as solar module is fag end of value chain which we are strengthening in India, however, there is still a wide gap in value chain of other components like Cells, Wafers, Ingots and Polysilicon which needs to gear up to support localization efforts for the sector.

Could you please provide insights into recent policy initiatives aimed at fostering the adoption of renewable energy?
Adoption of renewable energy has been growing in leaps and bounds and one of the most important reasons for this is consistency in government policy and investment in the sector.  Government of India has started with various initiatives in solar which is paying off with installed based growing every year significantly. Announcement of ambitious scheme of solarising 10 million roofs recently by honourable Prime Minister would become a game changer in coming years as far as adoption of solar in residential segment is concerned which we all were looking forward.

How successful is India so far in achieving its dream of emerging as a Net Zero Carbon emitting nation?
At the last concluded COP Summit India has voluntarily taken target of achieving net Zero Carbon goals by 2070. With sensitization of the cause and alignment from various stake holders we see a lot of work already happening in this direction. Especially corporates and multinational companies have volunteered and taken more aggressive targets in timelines to achieve their own net zero goals and we already see a lot of action happening in this space. Overall, with the development we see in renewables and allying sectors there is all likelihood that we achieve these goals well before time.

Looking forward, what is your vision for the renewable energy sector in India, and what growth strategy do you propose?
Panasonic is committed towards creating sustainable future and we are working on the subject with three action plans. First is our contribution towards the cause by converting all our operating units net Zero by 2030. Second is to enable others to achieve sustainable goals by helping them with energy efficient products like Solar, Hydrogen and battery storage and services like integrating them make Round the clock power and enable them to achieve 100 percent renewable goals. Our vision for renewable energy sector in India would be see they accelerate further in terms of deployment and increased contribution coming from distributed source of energy generation rather than centralized taking advantage of renewables in real sense.
