Modi lays foundation for Rs2700 cr Wagon factory

Vadodara, Nov (EPC News): Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi, laid the foundation stone of Jindal Rail Infrastructure Limited's new railway rolling stock manufacturing facility, located south of Karjan Railway station and spread across 204 bighas (117 acres approx), in Vadodara District of Gujarat. The project involves a total investment of Rs2700 crores.

In the first phase, the facility will employ 1100 workers and manufacture 3000 wagons per year. On completion, the project is expected to generate employment for about 4500 people. The series manufacture of wagons is proposed to begin from February 2011.

Initially, the facility will produce Open Type (BOXN) Freight Wagons for Coal, Iron Ore etc., Container Flat Wagons (BLC) for containers and Covered (BCN) Wagons for cement, food grain etc. Manufacture of the prototype wagon and it's approval by RDSO is expected by January 2011.

In the second phase, facilities to manufacture Electric and Diesel Multiple Units required for suburban passenger traffic will be set up.

The manufacturing process at the factory shall be as per RDSO (Research Designs and Standards Organization) document G-93 on facilities required for manufacture and testing of railway wagons and RDSO document G-72 dealing with general specification for fabrication of wagons. Prove-out of Plant capability along with Machinery & Plant trials is expected to be completed by October 2010.
