Eastern Rly freight loading rises 12.71%

Eastern Railway (ER) posted 12.71% rise in freight loading at 17.605 million tonnes (mt) between April and July this year, up from 15.620 mt in the same period of last year.

The proportionate target for the period, set at 17.190 mt, thus was exceeded. Coal continues to be the single largest item of freight traffic.

The throughput of coal during the period was 11.585 mt (10.027 mt). Of the incremental coal loading of 1.5 mt so far this fiscal, the share of Rajmahal coalfields, served by ER’s both Howrah and Malda divisions, was the largest, close to one mt.

The share of other goods was 6.020 mt (5.593 mt). The earning from the freight traffic during the period under review jumped 23.83% to Rs 1,024.28 crore (Rs 827.15 crore). ER’s total earning during the period amounted to Rs 1,526.8 crore, registering a growth of 17.62% (Rs 1,298.04 crore). The earnings from passenger traffic amounted to Rs 443.95 crore, from other coaching Rs 46.02 crore and from sundry Rs 12.55 crore.
