NALCO's expansion project near completion

New Delhi, Dec (EPC news): The ongoing II phase expansion project of NALCO is nearing completion, said B.K. Handique, Minister of mines and development of North Eastern Region, Thursday.

The total cost of the project is Rs4,402 crore.

"Out of two captive power units, one unit of 120 mw has been commissioned since August. Similarly, 93% of the pots in smelter expansion are already in services," said the minister.

According to the minister, NALCO has high cash reserve of around Rs3,500 crore as well as surplus alumina capacity. To strengthen its market presence, the company is working on the possibility of setting up a green field smelter, either in India or in foreign country. "We have shortlisted Indonesia and Iran as availability of coal and gas based power is cheap," he said.
