India plans gas-based power plant in Iran

8/25/2009 10:59:00 AM

New Delhi, Aug (EPC News): India is working on a proposal to build a gas-based power plant in Iran, with a capacity of at least 4,000 MW.

Options for bringing the electricity to India, either over land or through an undersea transmission cable, are being explored, the Power Secretary, H S Brahma, said. “Iran has plentiful of gas and we have good relations with the country,” Brahma said. He said the State-owned NTPC Ltd is likely to build the station and Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd may set up the accompanying transmission network to wheel the electricity from Iran to India. Iran has the world’s second-largest reserves of natural gas. While the proposed station may cost upwards of Rs 20,000 crore, depending on its final size and unit configuration, the Centre is considering the option of evacuating a chunk of the power from the project to India, either over land or via an undersea, 1,000/1,500-km high-voltage transmission link. The cost of an undersea transmission network will be almost three times that of an overhead network, Brahma said. “We want to finalize the design and site for the proposed project by October and approach the Iran Government with a proposal,” he added.
