Chennai Port

Chennai, Oct (EPC News): Chennai and Tuticorin Ports here are planning to set up captive wind farms entailing a combined investment of around Rs82 crore.

While Chennai Port will have a 7.5 MW wind farm, Tuticorin Port will set up a 6 MW one.

These wind farms will come up at Veppilian Kulam in Tirunelveli district, the Chennai Port Trust (ChPT) Chairman, Capt. Subhash Kumar, revealed. ChPT had invited bids for the purpose and hoped to complete the formalities by December.

The ChPT project was estimated to cost Rs40.73 crore and would require around 11-12 acres of land, Capt. Kumar said. The farm would meet 50 per cent of the Port’s electricity consumption, which was around 15 MW per annum, he added.

The Tuticorin Port Trust (TPT), on its part, has already issued a tender for the wind farm and six companies, including Vestas and Suzlon, have participated in the bidding process. The total project cost here will be Rs42 crore, Mr G. J. Rao, Chairman of TPT, revealed.
