Work on Parel Terminus redevelopment project to begin in June.

Work on Parel Terminus redevelopment project to begin in June.

in a decision that is likely to benefit regular commuters, the Central Railway on Wednesday announced the proposal of Parel Terminus redevelopment project. The conversion of Parel station into a terminus is likely to bring in an additional terminal platform, foot overbridge (FOB) and a skywalk for the ease of commuters.

Parel has been one of the busiest stations on the Central Railway, accommodating a footfall of around 1.5 lakh commuters. The proposal to bring an increase in the down and up lines of the platforms up to 10 metre and widening of FOB staircase is likely to boost the commuter handling capacity of the station.

It also includes the provision of a new FOB in the middle of the platform which will connect the eastern side of the platform to its west. This comes in addition to the existing FOB which connects Parel station to Elphinstone Road station on the Western Railway. This particular FOB is largely used by the commuters to change between the two lines.

Speaking on the necessity of converting the station into a terminus, Narendra Patil, Chief Public Relations Officer, said, Parel has been one of the growing suburban areas in terms of increased economic activity and increase of office crowd. Keeping this in mind, the project is being facilitated to manage the commuter rush. The present schedule of trains will remain unaffected.

Commuters will also get an additional skywalk that will connect the FOB on the eastern side to the CSTM (Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus)-end rail overbridge. An elevated booking office is also planned on the CSTM-end FOB along with the construction of a terminal platform.

The work on the project is likely to start next month and expected to finish in a span of 18-20 months. After the completion of the project, services of the train may likely see a change with respect to train timings, number of fast train services and additional services of trains starting from/stopping at Parel.

Sudhir Badami, transport expert, said, This is an efficient facility which has been planned for increasing rush of commuters at Parel station. However, Central Railway is still behind schedule as they should have finished this a few years back. They should have anticipated the development of the area to meet the day-to-day challenges of regular commuters. However, this is a positive step towards development.

The proposal of redevelopment of Parel terminus had been in discussion since the last three to four years by the Central Railway. The estimated cost of the entire project is around Rs 52 crore.
