Till now, 99 smart cities had been selected under the Smart Cities Mission and now with the selection of Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya, the mission to select 100 smart cities has been accomplished. Shillong has been selected after evaluating the proposal submitted by the Department of Urban Affairs, Government of Meghalaya.
The first list of selected smart cities, 20 in all, was announced in January 2016. The second list added 13 more cities to Smart Cities Mission and was declared in May 2016. In September 2016, 27 cities were announced and 9 more cities were added in the list declared in January 2018.
Now, with the selection of Shillong, the 100th smart city, the total investment under the Smart Cities Mission stands at Rs.2,05,018 crores.
