The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the Bogibeel bridge in Assam. This road- cum rail-bridge is about 4.94 km long and has been build at a cost of Rs. 5,900 crore by the Indian Railways. It is constructed over the river Brahmaputra and is a double-decker bridge with two railway lines on the lower deck and a three-lane road on the upper.
It will reduce travel time from Assam to Arunachal Pradesh to four hours and train travel between Delhi to Dibrugarh by three hours and can withstand heavy military tanks. It is the first fully welded steel bridge and the longest rail-cum-road bridge in India. One of the many benefits about this bridge is that defence forces can have a speedier access to Indo-China border and seamless access for medical facilities to remote parts of north-eastern states.
