Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Limited (NLCIL) has successfully installed three 100 MW Solar Power Projects for commercial operation, which was inaugurated by Piyush Goyal, Union Minister for Railways, Coal, Finance & Company Affairs. These solar power plants are located in Virudhunagar District at Thoppalaakkarai and Sethupuram, and in Tirunelveli District at Sellaiya Sezhiyanallur. Having a installed capacity of 100 MW each, these solar power plants were commissioned at a cost of Rs. 1300 Crores. This includes Operation & Maintenance (O&M) cost for 15 years.
After the inauguration ceremony, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between NLCIL and Anna University which would help in establishing a pilot project on drying of lignite by solar power to increase the caloric value from 2,700 Kcal to 4,350 Kcal. The pilot project will cost Rs. 2 crore 69 lakhs.
