To ascertain 100 percent quality in steel sector, the Ministry of Steel has released two quality control orders - Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2018 and Stainless Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2018. With this 16 more steel products have been brought under the control of quality control orders. By an earlier notification, 34 carbon steel products and 3 stainless steel products were brought under the ambit of steel Quality Control Orders. In total, by now, 50 carbon steel and 3 stainless steel products have been covered under the QCO. Quality Control is a must for steel products as inferior steel products are not only hazardous to human health but are also critical to safety and security of infrastructure projects. By this order, by now, approximately 85-90% of steel and steel products have been covered under QCO.
The ministry of steel is also contemplating to cover tin plates used in food, food additives, drug and medicines, under QCO. In consultation with stakeholders, the ministry is also in the process of bringing remaining steel products under QCO in a phased manner.
