Illegal sand mining at creek near Ulwe-Belapur link road

Despite recent crackdown on illegal sand mining at several locations in Maharashtra, there are still a few sites where such activity is going on brazenly.

Activists have complained to the authorities about large-scale sand mining taking place close to the sea creek near Ulwe-Belapur link road, at Ganeshpuri, leading to further damage of the wetlands and mangroves.

"The sand miners at Ganeshpuri are brazenly using heavy-duty suction pumps to take out large quantity of sand from the creek. Several barges can also be seen at the spot for this purpose in broad daylight," said activist Anarjit Chauhan.

Earlier this week, around 200 brass sand was visible. At least three suction pumps were also noticed. The mangroves lining the creek were damaged to take out more sand.

The Panvel taluka officials said that they will take action on this issue
