Govt has taken many steps to revive Aviation sector: Ashok Gajapathi Raju

Aviation Sector can be an engine of growth for any economy. The NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a number of steps to revive the aviation sector and put it on the path of growth.

Union Minister for Civil Aviation Ashok Gajapathi Raju has said that over 20% growth in domestic passenger traffic in India is highest in the world.

He added that significant investment is planned to maintain the momentum of the growth in the sector.

Significant investment has also been made to operationalize a number of airports:

• Durgapur international airport in WB operationalized with Rs 750 crore investment

• Civil Air Terminal in Chandigarh operationalized with Rs 924 crore investment

• Tirupati airport terminal operationalized with Rs 174 crore investment

• Khajuraho airport terminal operationalized with Rs 75 crore investment

A number of similar development projects have been undertaken and also underway. Kochi, for instance has become the world's first solar powered airport.

The draft aviation policy is expected to boost the growth in the aviation sector.

Meanwhile, Air India is showing signs of recovery as it has started making monthly operating profit after a gap of ten years.

The airline also did India proud during Operation Rahat as it evacuated 6000 Indian citizens and 45 foreign nationals from Yemen.

In the area of technology, the aviation sector is making great strides.

A comprehensive E-governance project e-GCA has been initiated to make about 160 services- such as licenses to airlines, pilots- online.

The system will promote transparency and increase efficiency. India is the fourth country in the world to commission GPS aided Geo Augmented Navigation or GAGAN.

As the aviation sector expands its service, the Aviation minister has emphasized that better air-connectivity to the North-East is priority for the government.

Efficient airline security is a major concern across the world. With the passage of Anti-Hijacking bill in the Parliament, the security of Indian Aviation has reached an important milestone.

It is hoped that significant investments and people-friendly policies will help maintain the momentum of growth in the sector in the coming years.
