Government approves Rs 1,948 crore bridge over Ganga in Allahabad

The government of India has given its nod to a proposal for construction of a bridge over river Ganga in Allahabad. To bridge to be constructed is 10-km long and will be build at a cost of Rs 1,948 crore. The bridge once completed will solve the traffic congestion on the existing 2-lane Phaphamau bridge. The bridge is expected to be commissioned by December 2021.

The bridge once completed will also boost tourism as it will ease the traffic for Kumbh mela, Ardh-Kumbh and other rituals at 'sangam'. The current capacity of the bridge is of 15,000 PCUs (Passenger Car Units), but today the bridge handles around 40,000 PCUs which is much higher than its designated capacity, thus resulting in heavy traffic.

The approval for bridge construction was taken by the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
