Conditional import of pet coke allowed for cement and other industries

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade in a notification has notified that that the import of pet coke for fuel purpose is prohibited. However, the notification further states that import of pet coke is free for use as feed stock or in the manufacturing process only on actual user basis for cement, lime kiln, calcuim carbide and gassification industries.

The Supreme Court has banned the use of petcoke as fuel in cement and other industries. According to Carnegie–Tsinghua Center for Global Policy pet coke emits 11 per cent more greenhouse gases than coal. India is the largest largest consumer of petcoke and imports over half its annual requirement of petcoke mainly from the United States while the other half is produced by Indian Oil Corp, Reliance Industries and Bharat Petroleum Corp and others.
