Central Railway handles 58 million tonnes of freight, creates new record
Central Railway, which in recent years has seen its freight loading from major ports like Jawaharlal Port Trust and Mumbai Port Trust falling, made a remarkable turnaround for the current financial year to create a new record in freight loading.
The originating freight loading of 58 million tonnes achieved during the year 2015-16 is the highest ever loading recorded in the history of Central Railway. As compared to 2014-15's freight loading, this is an increase of 4.3%. The earlier best ever loading of 56.84 million tonnes was recorded in the financial year 2007-08, almost a decade ago. The revenue earned from originating loading is expected
The revenue earned from originating loading is expected to be Rs 5522 crore and apportioned earnings Rs 7258 crore approximately, which is also an all-time high, 6.3% more than last year.
In a statement, CR said that the bulk of the growth in loading came about because of good numbers in the coal, fertilisers, petroleum and oil Products (POL) and cement. "Further the growth achieved is despite the drop in loading of containers and agro-based commodities i.e. foodgrains, sugar etc as compared to freight loading in 2007-08," they added.
