New Delhi, June (EPC News): A final decision on the ground handling policy to be implemented at the six metro airports from July 1 is expected only after the Cabinet Committee on Security takes a final view on the issue on Tuesday.

Sources indicated that with necessary arrangement not being in place for implementing the new ground handling policy, it is possible that the existing policy is allowed to continue for some more time. Ground handling activities include passenger and baggage check-in apart from aircraft cleaning and refuelling.

The new policy, if approved by the Government, will do away with the prevailing practice and bind airlines to choose from three agencies — airport operator, Air India or an independent private ground handling firm chosen by the airport — for the services.

Private carriers have been opposing the policy saying it would bind them to choose from within three agencies to get these services. The implementation of the new ground handling policy was pushed back till July 1 as several private airlines had objected, pointing out that existing policy enables them to not only save costs but also ensure faster turn around of their flights.
