New Chakan Airport to miss deadline

6/5/2009 5:25:11 AM

Mumbai,June(EPC NEWS): The Rs 7,000-crore New Chakan international airport is likely to miss the 2011 deadline to start operations as announced by Union Civil Aviation minister Praful Patel.

The Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) on May 11 floated tenders for consultants for a techno-economic study. The deadline for submission is set for October 2010 but the senior officials say that the construction work may begin by 2011.

Going by this schedule, the operations can start only by 2012-13. Nearly 3,330 hectares have to be acquired for the project from seven villages — Chandoos, Shiroli, Waki Budruk, Pimple Budruk, Kiwle, Koregaon Budruk and Wadgaon. The MADC had then said it would take three years after acquisition of land to get the airport developed.
