Air cargo biz expected to grow by 5.4%: Boeing

6/16/2009 3:41:57 AM

New Delhi, June (EPC News): Boeing has revised its forecast for air cargo growth over the next 20 years, saying it expects air cargo business to grow at an average annual rate of 5.4 % between 2009 and 2028, down from 5.8 % growth predicted last year and 6.1 per cent forecast in 2006.

Boeing said air freight traffic around the world declined six per cent in 2008 as compared to the previous year and has been falling through the first half of 2009.

But the world’s major aircraft manufacturer feels that the industry will still need more freighters; so much so that in the next 20 years the world’s freighter fleet will expand by more than 1,300 planes – from 1,940 to 3,250 by 2028.

As some of the existing freighters will become old and retire, the world fleet size by 2028, it is estimated, will comprise 2,760 planes, comprising 710 newly-built aircraft and the balance converted from passenger planes. The total cost will come to $170 billion, it is estimated.
